I’ve seen mention of Vassal previously as a means of ‘playing’ tabletop wargames over the internet. There are a vast quantity of mods available to tailor the generic functionality for something more specific. More recently this thread on a particular company’s forum mentions an alternative; Universal Battle. It sounds quite promising being browser based and having some free functionality.

I haven’t assessed the merits and weakness of either, but perhaps there is potential to get some games in whilst we’re spread around the country. Just need the time…

Yup, I’ve read the recent posts. I have registered but need time to occasionally play (but would potentially be more frequent then at the moment). Maybe a coordinated week’s trial would be in order sometime?

I will have a proper look later. Can you play one turn at a time like chess? So both players don’t necessarily have to be playing at the same time.

Quite possibly. I think the other company’s forum had a post suggesting games could be saved.

I guess for bb or dreadball we could actually play like online chess. It might take a while tho. I guess the biggest benefit of using a program is the dice rolling. I.e. no cheating :)

It would be good for 40k but might be difficult for necro with the multi levels.

I’m just back from hols and have seen (+ emailed by Rob) about Vassel open source board/card game software.

After briefly looking through the available games (aka modules) there are:
GoT 2nd Ed Board Game with the various expansions!
Talisman 3rd Ed
Small Worlds Underground
BBTM with Sudden Death

      and a Blood Bowl version

Arkham Horror

    and many many more…

I am yet to actually play, but the screenshots some most look great (especially Citadels + Arkham Horror) and the players/icons for DB.

I don’t expect this to replace gaming nights/weekends, but it would be great to involve those further afield… That said I think a group game can be saved mid-game; therefore, really useful for longer games (GoT etc)?

Scotland Yard (childhood classic)
Escape from Colditz (childhood classic)
Space Hulk
Battlestar Galactic + expansions (in other modules)
Elder Sign
and even Eclipse (a huge, highly rated game which I understand Pete has just got)!
