Post subject: Joy Ride

I’m a big fan of arcade racers. I particularly like them if they have up to 4 player play on the same screen.

A few years back Joy Ride was first announced as an up coming arcade title for xbox, due for release the following summer, but with the release of kinect it was changed to use the motion technology and so we had to wait until now for it to be released as a proper controller based arcade game! Very annoying, but worth the wait!

Other similar games I have, listing in cronological order of purchase:

– twisted metal – this game was ok, but with level based car system and a terrible split screen mode, multiplayer just didn’t really work. A waste of 1200 MS points (?!!?)

– TNT racers – to be fair I’ve not played this that much, but it is a good, fun, easy game! Played with 4 player with bros and co and we had a laugh. Nice and easy, runs more in the vain of the old micromachine games, with quirky “weapons” which are more for comic effect than useful. I like the interesting game modes, where it’s more about getting points than coming first.

– Wrecked – an updated version of a classic, Mashed. Much the same as it’s predecessor and with similar gameplay to the classic micromachine style racers, but with more realistic weapons, airstrikes for players who have fallen by the way side and just a lot more explosions. I’ve played this game a lot with various different people and it’s always been a hit!

Now, a great aspect of Joy Ride is that there are 15 different cars, based into 3 classes, tuner, muscle and trucks; tuner cars have the best handling but lack boost, muscle cars have the best acceleration but lack handling and trucks have great boost and strength but lack top speed and acceleration. I love this aspect! Twisted metal had a similar-ish system but cocked it up by making it level based and when you played multiplayer you couldn’t choose your own custom cars! And this was an aspect missing from the other 2 titles, which in my opinion took away from them. Wrecked, in particular should have had custom cars with different pros and cons.

Anyway, more about Joy Ride:

Joy Ride is an avatar game, so whichever car you choose your avatar will be at the driving seat making hand gestures and flinging himself or herself around when you pull stunts on big jumps. It’s easy to play, but all the cars feel wonderfully different. I love the muscle cars, steaming ahead on the straights and then skidding sideways through the bends.

The game modes include battle race, pro race and stunt park. Battle race is like a classic mariokart race, a normal race with crazy weapons to slow your opponents down, pro race is just a normal race, but stunt park has all the players free roaming around a large arena collecting coins, car parts and trophies. In fact there aren’t really any winners in stunt park, there’s no time limit and you can just enjoy driving around trying to get everything, which seems nearly impossible!

You can have up to 8 players racing at once, which is more than the others, and all the remaining slots are taken up by reasonable capable AI drivers, all in different vehicles.

Inside the races there are hidden car parts, which you have to collect if you want to unlock the other cars. To start with you only have 1 from each of the catergories. For each new car there are 3 hidden car parts and they’re spread across the tracks and stunt parks, some are very hard to find and others nearly impossible to get to! Once you’ve found all three parts for a car you then have to have enough money to buy it – you make money by racing; the more you race and the higher you come, the more money you get. You can also pay to change the colour of your car.

Anyway, this is a great game, which is why I thought I’d rant about it and at 800 MS points it’s the cheapest of all the arcade racers! I would summarise it as Mariokart for the xbox, with a fantastic collectable system for getting new cars.

Hope to see people on it soon!

Good man :)

Your response sounds very defeatist though! Try the demo first! It’s a very good demo, which gives a taste of everything, pretty much.

Had some awesome fun playing joy ride last night with tubes, miquette and joe (a mate from asda). Miquette, joe and I were playing split screen and we invited tubes to join us for some chaotic arcade racing awesomeness!

I hope tubes liked it as I think it was literally his first ever race! Didn’t even get a chance to practice on his own! Still, he almost won a race or two… almost ;)

Aarrggghhh why did Miq make me get it!? I’ve resisted playing it for only 30min this morning. I’ve already learnt some shortcuts etc…

It is horrendously addictive at first, but after a while I think you learn the tracks and it loses it’s single player appeal. I just play multiplayer now and slowly grab the different car parts.

Having 4 of us playing was good, but it’d be great if we can get more! ;)

Yes it is! Now you will have to suffer for doubting me and be beaten in said game at some point soon.
