Looks like Mantic have their own take on a sport board game…Dreadball. Obviously looks quite a lot different, in the main because it’s Sci-Fi. I look forward to seeing what comes of it. GFL Doom?!

I’ve since read suggestions that DreadBall may be more like dodgeball than American Football. Irrespective I’m interested to see and read more…and I’m under the impression it’ll be on show at the Mantic Open Day in September (release date ~November). I’m going as should be Doom and Tubes. Looking forward to it :D

Photos are being progressively released. A range can be found at Warseer. I’m not completely sold on the first impressions, although there is a referee model included. Rumours has it that Mantic will be running another Kickstarter campaign for it. I was under the impression the game and teams were all essentially prepared, so what sort of stretch targets can/will they offer?!

Hummm…well the DreadBall Kickstarter is live. I’m still pretty lukewarm about it, but there are 37 days until it ends. I best see if that extends beyond the Mantic Open Day when I can see it in the flesh.

Perhaps I’m warming to it, largely thanks to the interesting details revealed about the game’s mechanics. Jake Thornton, the game designer, posted an enlightening comparison again Blood Bowl which is really well worth a read. There are definitely elements which sound like improvements; smoother flow, faster games, interesting tactical elements. Interesting nuggets have also been posted on BGG.

The KickStarter is progressing well. I’d consider going for a ‘Striker!’ bid. This would be the time to buy anything if anyone is interested in DreadBall. Thankfully the target has already been met where Mantic will create differently post models, in addition to those already revealed.

Thst actually looks very interesting. Sounds like a decent game mechanic as well

I saw the blog and was quite relieved that they are aware of possible conflictions with BB, and that they’ve made it distinct.

The images from the rule book today look great…!

Pleased to see the Kickstarter has passed the (IMO) ‘core’ stretch targets, resulting in MVPs for all the initial teams. Rumour has it that Mantic will be looking to bring forward the development of future teams (all female Corporation, insect-like, the plague etc) and enhance the components of the game components. The next stretch target will also see the release of improved counters for Kickstarter backers. I’m hoping for a wider production of the acrylic game board.

I checked the calendar and, unfortunately, the Kickstarter ends the weekend of the Mantic Party

I believe Tubes has now put a pledge in.

The Kickstarter is rumbling on, in fits and starts. I think Mantic are slowly realising that they need to dangle a series of stretch targets at a time, instead on giving little bits every so often once a target is achieved.

In related news a gameplay overview video is now available. Creator Jake Thornton has also posted his thoughts on the Season 2 expansion, Ultimate Dreadball expansion and Dreadball Xtreme standalone game.

Post subject: Re: Dreadball

I’ve been meaning to post a couple of things on the forum for a week or so. So here goes…

I’ll admit that Rob & I have gone for a ‘Cheerleader’ pledge on the Dreadball Kickstarter (so 2 sets for slightly less money). It appears to be accelerating again after a couple of updates over the past day or so. It is ever expanding with more to come! Keepers, other races/pitches/game formats…

However it does look refreshingly different to BB. Click here for a U Tube video on the basic game play. It looks really quick/fast paced!

Also Jake Thornton’s blog/website for his design/gameplay notes on Dreadball, and other games, plus game design

To be honest I am looking forward to it as a refreshing change to BB. Initially using it as a fast paced evening game. Maybe then working on a league/team advancement…

Aside from Kickstarter funding Season 2 and the start of the season 2 additional teams, I think the really interesting news to come out are Jake Thornton’s view on DreadBall leagues. Some nice touches there including; lowest placed teams select their opponents, MVPs are limited and auctioned off each round, free agents can be of any race.

Oh and the basic DreadBall rule book is available online!

Post subject: Re: Dreadball

I’ll be perfectly honest but the new concepts appear to becoming shitter but the milestone. Thankfully the core games looks great, with the additional rules providing further potential. But as for the Season 2 teams…

Things are starting to run away! Lot that bothered about the stretch targets, but more money funds more development sooner. Happy to see that :)

With only 3 days to go Mantic have released an ‘extended play video‘. It seems very quick & easy!

I know Luke was interested in learning about DB. Please tell him of this video. We’ll also probably have a play test tomorrow!

Post subject: Re: Dreadball

Mantic have been having a ‘DreadBall’ week (yet another poorly managed anticlimax with inconsistant posts & old news – but maybe I’m being too harsh).

However there are some photos of soon to be released teams, MVPs and a video of the actual boxed game. Click here to see the posts.

      • The ‘space skaven’ MVP looks ok, nice & big.
      • The gobbo looks really stupid with that huge tash (maybe its just the size of it – Snsilracer is this what you’re aiming for this Mo-ember?!)
      • For me ‘The Enforcer’ does not look very dynamic. As a Guard why is he handing off? His other arm with a fist does not look dynamic.
      • Logan looks far better than his concept drawing – phew! I love how they have painted him. I’ll have to give that a go.
      • Wildcard look good. They should have been a team of Tron-type players

What is very deceptive about this game is the scale. They are ‘true’ 28mm. This means the whole game (storage & on table) is small. So paying stupid money (~£50) for a Gucci acrylic pitch is… Stupid. Especially when you see that the etched lines between the tile hexes are barely a mm wide or deep. You could easily snap one of these pitches. Also the solid colour is a turn off, but maybe I’m brainwashed by the sharp, clean, illuminated lines of Tron (like this awesome pitch!).

I can’t wait to get my hands on the game around mid-late Nov. Hopefully we’ll arrange a day when everyone is down (& we know the rules to then competently teach/demonstrate you the awesomeness of this game.

Post subject: Re: Dreadball

Really nothing particularly significant but the Golem Painting Study Blog has a post of a recent Blood Bowl event, where DreadBall was run alongside. It make a couple of comparisons between the two which may be of interest.

I believe the Kickstarter should have shipped by now. Hopefully Tubes can get his mitts on the goodies this weekend!

Apparently Tubes is still waiting :(

In the meantime here’s a team spreadsheet that sounds good. I haven’t looked at it quite yet. I’ll download it tomorrow. Note the updated link further down the thread.

Well if others where interested in getting a team, MVP or whatever else took their fancy…

I have been sent a email with the opportunity to add extras onto our original pledge. We aren’t, but if you are interested you can be everything cheaper than retail + 2for1 teams etc

Post subject: Re: Dreadball

Rather than fill up DB Easter post I’d thought I write some DB musing here.

Great day with 3 games played (for myself and Snailracer). I hope you all found it fun, informative, a great few learning games for all. I have certainly been enlightened with:

– All the Season 1 team playing styles
– The ref and fouling (which should happen more as it is not too severe – more to come in another post…)
– The DB cards and fan checks

I hope it has whetted your appetite for a different sports game. I’d like to bring it along to the next Thus meet (11th Apr?). I hope we could run a league with games going about 1hr30 (once you’ve acquired the basics of the game i.e. 5 action points and all rolls are based around a core 3 dice roll with more/less dice).

With a printed pitch we could run 2 games side by side, probably sharing the DB card deck initially. Proxy models are fine too (though sharing the cost of a boxed game with 2 teams and a pitch is a bargain price).

I will write a bit more later…
