Some really interesting insight into game/team design AND a preview into Season 2 team abilities on Jake Thornton’s blog!

Robots

Zzor (bugs)

Insight into Judwan (like Tau?) & Female Corporation to follow – I assume. Overall they are more complicated teams than the ‘vanilla’ Season 1 teams.

Sounds interesting. Particularly interested to see how the female Corporation turn out.

Jake posted a blog covering the S2/female Corporation team. The little subtle differences sound very intriguing. I’d read elsewhere previously that the rules aren’t purely for females as such. Any Corporation team can use the S2 rules, just just have to declare which team ruleset you are using on formation.

Jake has recently provided infomation for the last Season 2 DB team – Judwan

The rumours are that they are going to be Move 5. However they have a special enhanced throwing range bands of 4 hex, rather than the usual 3.

It is confirmed in the blog that they have Speed 3+, so very nimble but a perfectly average Skill 4+.

The key point is that they are all Strikers so none can Slam. It was found in play testing that opponents could trap them in corners and they could not escape their pummeling… So a new skill has been developed “Feint” where they can turn or even move an opponent away,

A significant point, due to their enhanced throwing range, is that they would not get an additional negative when striking from the bonus hex. Therefore they can only score 1pt and 3pt strikes, so the opponent cannot be totally wiped out with a fast, agile throwing game.

They seem really quite interesting. (Though I read somewhere that they cannot have any subs, sounds a bit strange…)

I’m a bit disappointed that they’ve made a team that breaks the core rules of the game – not being allowed to score bonus points seems daft.

The feint action sounds ok. I spose we’ll wait to see what they’re like when we play with them…

Breaks the core rules of the game? Jake mentions that if he allowed them to slam that would have broken the core philosophy behind DB where certain positions can only perform certain actions.

I’d think that a Judwan team without the bonus score limitation would be hitting the 4 pointers fairly frequently by their throwing game (with free actions for doubling catches etc). Read his blog comments (I think, if it is not within the main blog text) to get the background: Digby allows them to not have to use gloves but they can throw better so to appease other teams Judwan cannot score bonus points.

They have obviously been play tested, so it is judged on experience and the DB principles.

I was referring to the no bonus points. But everything you’ve said sounds reasonable to a certain extent. I just don’t like it when rules or teams have to be given exceptions to work properly, or fairly.

I appreciate in an ideal world the bonus point would be applicable to all teams. However the team/player stats can only be varied so much. With that done within S1 Jake has had to provide other tweaks (skills and abilities) to differentiate S2 teams.

I think the extra hex to their throwing range bands is huge (playing with and against them). I’m sure you’ll appreciate them not able to get the bonus points when playing against them! Or would the purist within you be itching due to that tweak in the DB scoring principles? ;)

After reading about them I am very intrigued with their playing style (but the models need reposing!). I think I’d get frustrated about not being able to take any opposing players off the pitch (unless they fall over dodging and then the Judwan stomp them… but their pacifist ability may preclude that?)

I’m really looking forward to playing with and against them. Their ‘pacifist’ natire will be strange initially (can’t even throw a ball at an opponent) but add some welcome variation. I’m not that bothered about the lack on bonus points; I suspect they’ll be throwing the ball around the pitch with relative ease. Imagine how good they might become with ‘safe pair of hands’!

The match-up I’m especially looking forward to is against Veermyn. Points galore, back and forth!

Read earlier how the Judwan will start with only 6 players. With our Kickstarter bundle we might have enough for two teams?!

Apparently plenty more information about S2 new rules over the new few days on Jake’s blog including: Cheerleaders, Resurrecting dead players, New skills etc

Don’t worry about all the previous posts on this topic as the Season 2 rulebook is out! I downloaded a Kickstarter version earlier and have had a read through.

Cheerleaders and Coaches add an interesting extra dimension (though I don’t really rate the models) i.e. extra fan checks for certain scores, or additional offensive/defensive action points/dice.

The new teams look interesting and as mentioned in the above posts are subtly different with new skills/abilities. The Zzor really don’t interest me at the moment, though the others do look cheeky.

There are a whole host of new MVPs with interesting quirks i.e. ‘Show Off’ where it is tougher to Strike but you get a Fan Check if you do score, or ‘Prima Donna’ where your Guard may become a Striker as they want some of the glory too… :S

There is also a great section at the end with FAQ and Errata for S1 and S2 rules.

But don’t worry I hope you all enjoy playing a bit with the S1 rules… then maybe…
