Judging by Pete’s reply shall we go for this Sat afternoon: 1300 onwards, at our dad’s, 4 of us so we can take a race/team each?

Rob bring your game down & I’ll also have to remember.

Anyone have any preference on the team they play as:
Corporation (very average human)
Marauders (Orx so a bit of balance, a few big hitters & loads of ok nimble gobbos)
Veer-Myn (very fast/agile but unskilled with a couple of hitters)
Forge Fathers (very hitty team but slow)

Would be nice to play 2 or 3 games each to see the teams’ strengths & weaknesses, get to grips with the game itself & see how player development works…

Bring drinks & nibbles as required.

I had planned to watch the football with Dad at 3pm on the Saturday.

Just say when is best for you. Maybe sat morning 1000 onwards, or Monday?

Well from 3-5 isn’t the best, but apart from that. So 10am on Sat would be fine.

Great, as long as the others are ok with that we’ll go for 10 to 2ish.

Bring whatever you need to sustain yourself over lunch.

Any team preferences? I’m not fussed. If you want a heads up on their abilities/tactics it’s probably best to have a look on the Mantic forum

Wouldn’t mind a go with the generic humans (corporation?) as I haven’t really seen the game before.

I’ll have my game and teams down. Will take the train the day before.

Happy to try whoever. I’ll perhaps give the Veermyn a go…being pulped.

I’m around but will have to run saturday by the boss! If I can do all day saturday how about trying out the necromunda terrain when pete heads off to watch gayball? Three gang action in the underhive…

And happy to play whatever team. I think i’ve played all but the forge fathers so I will volunteer to use them first.

Are you planning on using the league rules? After each game are we going to do upgrades etc and then swap teams? Or keep the same team for three games?

I’m not particularly bothered how we play it. Given that Tubes, Snailracer and myself will have got a few games in (over a three month period!), maybe we should start to investigate how teams develop and see whether we can hone team strategies instead of chopping and changing again. This may not favour Spence though. In my mind it’ll all be good clean fun anyhow. Last time I played, against Wallis, I think I was helping him beat me ;)

I’ll have Thursday and Friday off (yes!!!!). Aside from a bit of painting to give the impression my teams appear respectable, I may have a warm up game against myself. In the meantime a bit of rule refreshing…

DreadBall Quick Reference Sheet – A pretty comprehensive outline of the rules and game sequences
Other useful links

Happy to try Necromunda, but I will be coming in completely cold. It has been years since I last played! Any handy quick reference cards about? Probably not thanks to GW’s enlightened community support policies…

Post subject: Re: DB Easter

Ok it’s nearly all sorted…

Matt – Forge Fathers
Pete – Corporation
Rob – Veer-Myn
Me – Marauders

My vision was to keep our teams for a few rounds, all learn a bit more of the game & see how team development goes. So may have to play fairly conservatively if your getting smashed (I have read some are easy to kill :S ).

Yup, happy to check out a bit of Necromunda later. The terrain looks even better now my black spray has dried!

Post subject: Re: DB Easter

Guys,

Just a quick update/refresh before tomorrow. I’m aiming for a very light-hearted refresh of the game and everyone discovering more about everything DB related! I hope the below post helps.

Player types
Striker: benefit when evading (dodging), picking up & throwing (passes and strikes) the ball.
Can use full move before throw
Cannot slam

Guard: benefit when slamming (blocks)
Can use full move before slam
Cannot handle the ball

Jack: no specific benefits but can do everything
Can only move 1 hex prior to slamming or throwing

Team extras
Coaching dice: can be used once, added to a roll for greater chance of passing
You gain coaching dice from achieving outstanding feats (showboating) and buying them between league rounds.

Dreadball cards: can provide a free action or event, used in addition to your 5 action points per turn
A DB card can be bought with an action point, but you can only buy (or hold – i think?) up to as many on your team roster at the start of the match.

Teams
The following are the given starting teams (which are meant to have been balanced). In a league you cannot have more than double the starting number of player types.

I have very briefly mentioned their pros/cons, number of player types, cost per player type & team extras.

Corp: strength in depth i.e. totally average can be tailored to your style
3 Striker 10mc
2 Guard 10mc
3 Jack 8mc
1 Coaching dice
2 Dreadball card

FF: strength in slamming, weak strikers
2 Striker 9mc
3 Guard 13mc
3 Jack 9mc
1 Coaching dice
1 Dreadball card

VM: strength in speed though weak skill
2 Guard 12mc
6 Striker 11mc
0 Coaching dice
1 Dreadball card

Orx: some of the best slammers and fairly flexible jacks
3 Guard/Orx 13mc
5 Jack/Gobbo 9mc
1 Coaching dice
1 Dreadball card

Advancement/MVPs
We’ll hopefully gain some experience during the first round and be able to try out the player advancement. If not we may inject a couple of random player advancements before round 2.

If we can get to round 3 I’d like to then add MVPs to each team (for free but they are all basic costed at 8mc)

Corp – “Lucky” Logan (Jack)
FF – Gorim Ironstone (Striker)
VM – “John Doe” (Guard)
Orx – Number 88 (Jack)

Oh and we’ll aim to use the referee from the start. The Referee is essentially another person who can block a hex, cannot touch the ball and does not have any threat hexes. The Ref also increases the chance of spotting a foul within 7 hexes of themselves.

Each player has a chance to move the Ref at the end of their turn. So use the Ref to block, impede, protect a hex for the following rush turn.

Enjoyed the games today. The main point I’ve taken away from playing some more games is that nearly every game is close right to the end and can be swung easily with a .last gasp score. The game stays alive and promotes positive play so no cage building or grinding down the clock.

It would be good to play some more and try the league rules out. I am sorely tempted to get a copy of the game. I may well be busting out the colouring pencils to make a board..

Yep some good games. For the record the results were (conflicting with normal reported trends! – DB Database):

Home vs Away
Forge Fathers (SnailRacer) 1 – Veermyn 0 (BrizzleRob)
Marauders (Tubes) 1 – Corporation 0 (Spence) Sudden death, all strikers and jacks off the field
Forge Fathers (SnailRacer) 4 – Corporation 0 (Spence)
Marauders (Tubes) 0 – Veermyn 1 (BrizzleRob)
Marauders (Tubes) 3 – Corporation (SnailRacer) 0

Some incredible bouts of luck, with equal or greater droughts of favourable dice rolls. I enjoyed the matches, learning a good amount about Veermyn and other teams. Just wished I could throw more 5+ rolls when striking…

Should have pointed out that the final game, Marauders vs Corporation, SnailRacer was still in with a chance of winning at the very end. A single 4+ dice roll for a 4 point strike stood between glorious victory and defeat.

The more you shake it… ;)

Sounds like you had a good day. Looking forward to being able to get my team up and running and in the meantime, I hope to read about you guys getting a league going!

I loved reading about the human league and orc league. If you guys get as enthusiastic about DB then it should be very entertaining :)

It was a good day. I almost think its a shame I swapped from Forge Fathers to corp for the last game as I was getting used to their gameplay and it would have been an interesting match up.

I found a printable pitch on boardgamegeek so I may knock one up. That said looking at the prices for individual components to make it yourself it may be easier and more cost effective to just buy the boxed game.

A league would be good but it is that thing of having to spend money. If we can adapt BB teams to use for a first season, to see if we want to buy into it then that may work. The biggest benefit is that a game is only two hours long (and probably quicker once you know it) so other games could be played after it on a games evening.

I gave the dice a strong and long shake for every roll! I’m well versed in high dice rolling theory!

Regarding component parts, yesterday highlight to me how significant the cards are to the game. Making decent mock-ups of those wouldn’t be particularly easy or cheap. I can’t think anyone would object to using BB teams as a stand in. That said if someone wanted a Corp team, and another a Marauder team, the cost of the basic game would be quite effective. Notionally the cards, board and other bits would be <£10 over the price of the teams individually.
